When should you use the lubricant?
Lubricants play an important role in facilitating penetration during both vaginal and anal intercourse. The vagina typically produces its own natural lubrication when a woman is sexually aroused, making additional lubricant unnecessary in most cases. However, if the vaginal area feels dry, a lubricant can enhance comfort and ease.
In contrast, using lubricant is essential for anal sex since the rectum does not produce natural lubrication. Although many condoms are pre-lubricated, the amount is insufficient for anal intercourse, so pairing condoms with a water-based lubricant is strongly recommended.
Avoid oil-based lubricants like body lotions, massage oils, or Vaseline, as these can compromise the latex, increasing the risk of condom breakage. To use a lubricant correctly, apply it to the outside of the condom after putting it on, as well as to the entrance of the rectum or vagina. Do not apply lubricant inside the condom, as this could cause it to slip off during intercourse.
